Henry Giroux: What is a "public intellectual?"

Henry Giroux is a dissident educational scholar who pioneered something called critical pedagogy. The goals of critical pedagogy are emancipation: its targets are racism, sexism, capitalism and and really, any form of oppression. Its methods are through raising the public consciousness -- it’s an educational project, not a detailed political plan. That’s why the public intellectual is so important: that’s why Henry Giroux is one of Canada’s foremost public intellectuals. We ask Professor Giroux: what is a public intellectual?
